TEACHING SUMMARY PROJECT

Nursing 402- Career Pathway Assessment

Teaching paper

Purpose of Assignment

The purpose of the assignment is to provide the student the opportunity to summarize in detail the development, implementation, and evaluation of an instructional intervention for a specific patient population or professional group.

Approach to Assignment

I approached this assignment recognizing the need for successfully educating clinical staff on fall prevention. I recognized the challenge of meeting the needs of the clinical staff and providing quality patient care. I learned that promoting a safer culture for patients is a collaborative process and can be accomplished with accessible education, hands on practice, and addressing any individual concerns.

Reason for Inclusion

My personal experience in Nursing has led me to discuss this topic further. Providing a safe environment for patients is a critical aspect of Nursing and a controllable factor in our practice.  Following my nursing philosophy, I assume responsibility in my professional practice to educate others in preventing harm and promoting good.  This paper allowed me to lead a successful teaching plan for falls while meeting the unique needs of staff members. It has inspired me to lead other projects in my Nursing career.

Curricular outcomes

Critical thinking

· Uses nursing and other appropriate theories and models to guide professional practice:

The targeted audience comprised of  an interdisciplinary team of clinical staff including physicians, LPNs, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, and clinical techs on an intermediate care unit. Thus, the Standards of Practice and Performance chosen as the basis of the teach project are from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses for Acute and Critical Care Nursing practice. These standards define elements such as quality of practice, education, communication. collaboration, and environmental health required for the practice of competent critical care nurse. These standards provided me with a base on how to successfully meet the goals of my teaching project.

· Revises actions and goals based on evidence rather than conjecture:

Understanding environmental risk factors, universal fall precautions, demonstrating a fall risk assessment, and identifying ways of patient handling to prevent falls were the focus of the teaching plan after performing a needs assessment. Identifying that time, method of teaching preferred, and availability of equipment influence the overall goal of fall prevention helped provide a structured program for staff  and a means for them develop new skills.

· Engages in creative problem solving:

Promoting change in practice among a large group of health care professionals can be challenging.  Through a cross sectional survey distributed to all clinical staff, learning needs were identified. The teaching plan allowed clinical staff to collaborate and discuss different ways to prevent falls on the unit and identify any barriers to implementing a program.

Teaching

· Provides teaching to patients and/or professionals about health care procedures and technologies in preparation for and following nursing or medical interventions:

The teaching project is designed to prevent falls on the unit through lecture, demonstration, and group discussion. This is with the intention clinical staff are prepared to appropriately act during a fall and identify any risk factors to prevent falls.

· Uses information technologies and other appropriate methods to enhance one’s own knowledge base:

Understanding fall prevention and incorporating it into practice requires skill and hands on practice. Powerpoint presentations, interactive videos, and pictures proved as successful self study tools to promote understanding.

What has changed through my teaching project?

As an intermediate care nurse, I incorporate these standards daily in my own professional practice. Through this assignment, have learned to be a better caregiver, educate others, and a leader in providing quality patient care.
