Career Pathways Assessment Paper

Purpose of the Assignment

Purpose:  The purpose of this assignment is to enable the student to reflect upon and examine his or her career path in nursing, from the time they entered their first nursing education program until now, in order to formulate educational and professional goals that will be the focus of their learning in this BSN program.

Student Approach to the Assignment

This paper was writted at the start of my nursing school journey.  It allowed me to reflect specifically on what I expect and value from nursing practice and how I will incorporate that in the form of future education and professional advancement.

Reason for Inclusion

This assignment is included to reflect on where I started in the program and see whether or not my career pathway has changed during the course of my education so far.

Criteria 12

·Engages in continuous and complex self-reflection and self-evaluation of performance

This paper required me to examine educational, personal, and professional steps that have led to completing the BSN program.  In this paper, I reflected on all of these aspects including work and personal experiences as well as educational that have brought me to the point of starting and successfully completing this program.

 · Recognizes personal strengths and weaknesses

A major component of the paper was a self-assessment in which I had to examine my own strengths and weaknesses.  This helped me think about what I needed to work and build up on as I started my professional journey as a nurse.

 ·Summarizes accomplishments

The paper allowed me to examine my personal, educational, and professional accomplishments at the start of the BSN coursework at ODU.  I wrote about my most pivotal educational experiences and accomplishments along with personal and professional achievements.

 ·Prescribes future learning needs

Completing a career pathway, goals, and a focus area allowed me to decide the direction that I want my career to follow at the time and in the future.  These sections laid out the framework for what I would like to accomplish educationally and professionally in the future.

My Educational Goals

Originally, I wrote that I would like to use the BSN program to become better at researching, delegating, and being a leader. I wanted to develop more about leadership skills, improve on time management skills, and learn more about nursing as a profession.  Professionally, I would like to use my educational experience in my practice to become better at communicating with a wide variety of people, learning how to apply new skills in a fast paced clinical settings, and taking charge professionally to make a difference.

Most of these goals were met through the BSN program.  I  believe I have become better at performing nursing researching on evidence based practice as well as developing leadership skills by consider common scenarios in clinical practice and how I would deal with them. I would also say my time management skills have improved both inside and outside of nursing practice by performing focused assessments and using proper clinical judgment.  Time management is something I have struggled with as I transitioned from a student to a novice nurse and I believe that I will only improve on it further through time, practice, and absorbing each patient experience.

What to do now

Once I graduate, I intend to use my education to advance my career by pursuing a masters or doctoral degree in Nursing.  However, I would like to take my time and get some experience on my current medical care unit and advance as a critical care nurse in the ICU. Once I am proficient in that setting, I would like continue my education with an advanced degree as a nurse practitioner or nurse anesthetist.  This program has taught me that I am able to use research to guide my nursing practice. It has allowed me to  develop leadership skills and administrative tools in order to move up the leadership chain.  I will continue to  be open minded and explore the many roles open to nurses in order to find my true niche.
